ClimateLabs Project Launch in Manizales, Colombia with 13 Universities

ClimateLabs Project to promote innovation and collaboration on climate change among universities

 

The first iteration of these climate action laboratories will now be developed with a consortium of 13 Universities from Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, France, Italy and Spain. The three-year project, funded by Erasmus+ grant from the European Union, will establish climate action laboratories in the participating Latin American Universities, in order to strengthen their capacities for research and innovation regarding mitigation and adaptation to climate change. The European Universities will offer guidance and knowledge

Within these climate labs, different social actors such as universities, local governments, and NGOs can co-create products, services and methodologies to resolve social needs surrounding climate changes and the multiple threats the climate crisis contains. 2811’s role in the project, with Ashoka, is to facilitate knowledge sharing and methodology development between the different partner universities.

The participating Colombian Universities from the coffee region—University of Caldas, University of Manizales, University of Quindío, and the Technological University of Pereria—and UNIMINUTO have elaborated on climate challenges are mostly related to agriculture, while participants from Guadalajara, México from the University of Guadalajara and TEC of Monterrey, emphasize climate change effects in the agricultural region of Jalisco as well as in the large city of Guadalajara. The participating Brazilian universities come from different cities—PUCRS from Porto Alegre, PUCPR from Curitiba and UNICAP from Recife—so they face different environmental challenges based on the geography and the urban context.

 

Project Kickoff in Manizales, Colombia

 

60 professionals from the participating Universities met at the University of Caldas, Colombia in Manizales in the first week of march to kick off the project. The kickoff meeting aimed to put all the university partners on the same page in terms of the project’s work plan and to share experiences from different perspectives to inspire one another about what could be possible in the development of the project in the upcoming years. Some inspiring workshops also took place in U de Caldas Bioprocesses Plant and the Botanical Garden. We also planted trees in a “sembrathon” to offset the carbon emissions caused by our air travel to Colombia.

 
 

Our Impact

Since 2019, the 2811 Climate Action Academy has trained more than 400 teachers from North and South America. In the guided training program, teachers acquire tools and knowledge to teach about climate science, climate justice, and community-level climate solutions through an interdisciplinary perspective.

The Climate Action Academy is a “Community of Practice.” The CAA community of practice includes teachers from kindergarten to twelfth grade, college, university and beyond, as well as museum and nature center educators, directors of sustainability education initiatives, and community leaders who teach beyond the classroom.

The course features youth activists, community workers, teachers, and academic scholars as guest speakers in order to foster a holistic approach for integrating climate change into school curriculum. Out of the training, teachers not only know more about the climate crisis causes, impacts, and solutions, but also build skills for advocacy and solutions implementation. The virtual format lends itself to an active online community, where teachers stay in conversation and build on what they learned by forming local coalitions. For example, 8 CAA grads from New Mexico have formed a coalition to advocate for their schools and districts to transition to 100% renewable solar energy.

Monitoring the impact of the program, our surveys show a 25% increase in confidence to teach about climate change, a 60% increase in access to pedagogical material, knowledge and methodologies for climate action, and a 62% increase in likelihood to participate in community projects for climate action. Teachers are amplifiers for knowledge and inspiration, so we know that this impact grows exponentially each year.

At 2811, we promote the integration of climate action and innovation at the institutional level, training the teachers, professionals, and citizens who will lead us a just climate future and a low-carbon economy. We have recently expanded the idea of the climate action laboratories (Labs de Acción Climática – LAC) in East Africa and we hope to partner with more universities and organizations to create further impact in this field.
